Create The Perfect Outdoor Space With Orlando Home Inspectors

In the summer your backyard can quickly become the most important “room” of your home. However, you aren’t alone if your backyard looks outdated and lackluster. Weather conditions can be tough on outdoor areas, but with a few simple updates, you can create the perfect outdoor living space.

Backyard gates

Usually the first thing you and your guests see when entering your yard is the gate, so why not make a great first impression by updating rusty and squeaky gate hardware. D&D Technologies’ LokkLatch Magnetic gate latch operates and locks from both sides of the gate, and it’s re-keyable so you don’t have to carry multiple keys for your house. Featuring D&D’s patented magnetic latching and horizontal and vertical adjustment to ensure a consistent gate closure upon ground movement, LokkLatch Magnetic is the first gate lock to offer coordinating handle trim covers that match your lighting and yard accessories. Available in black, brushed and chrome trim covers, this gate latch helps to create a cohesive look that enhances your outdoor living environment. Complete the look with matching TruClose self-closing gate hinges, also offering coordinated trim covers.

Lighting

Weather permitting, your yard can be the perfect place to relax for an evening. Avoid sitting in total darkness. The many options of patio lighting including path sconces, post lamps and even string lights –all are an answer to keeping your outdoor space lit and inviting.

Furniture

The key to decorating any room in your home is attractive, comfortable furniture that beckons to be sat upon, and this is no different for your outdoor furniture. While prices on outdoor furniture can be a little overwhelming, used furniture with a little love and creativity can be good as new, without the high cost. Cozy chairs, chaise lounges and benches can gain new use with a coat of outdoor spray paint, then recover cushions and add colorful pillows to finish it off.

Pool gates

Pools are often the focal point of summer backyard activity. Make sure your pool is safe for children and pets with an isolation fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Pool gates should be at least 48 to 60 inches tall (depending on local safety code requirements) and accommodate a secure locking device such as D&D’s MagnaLatch safety gate latch that extends above the height of the fence to keep the release knob out of reach of children. With its magnetic latching system, it won’t jam, is self-latching and vertically and horizontally adjustable. MagnaLatch features a contemporary design and comes in both black and white to match your gate and accessories. Visit www.ddtechglobal.com for a full range of gate hardware products and to find a retailer near you, including many fencing contractors, hardware retail stores, Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Plants, flowers and shrubs

Even if they’re only alive for a few months out of the year, flowers can bring any yard to life. A few strategically placed shrubs, flower beds and herb gardens can help turn your outdoor area into a lively space perfect for relaxing personal moments or parties with friends and family.

Statues and accessories

Give your backyard even more personality by selecting a few garden statues or other accessories that reflect your style – such as recycled metal sculptures, elaborately painted bird houses, unique planters or large colorful rocks.

With a few simple updates, you can easily create an outdoor retreat in your own backyard that can provide you the space for entertaining, reading and relaxing without a costly renovation. So go get started.

Home Improvement Tips With Home Inspector Orlando

Home improvements can satisfy a variety of different desires for any homeowner, from the desire to improve a home’s value, to a need for a more livable space, to a simple interest in seeing something new. Read this article to learn some things to consider before starting your next home improvement project.

Painting a room is perhaps the cheapest home improvement you can carry out. A fresh coat of paint in a different shade or texture can completely transform a room for minimal cost. If your walls are not in the best condition and you don’t have time to re-plaster them before painting, consider hanging wallpaper instead, to avoid drawing attention to the damage.

You can make really neat one of a kind plant stands from old stools. You can buy some old stools from yard sales, garage sales or your local thrift shop. The older the better and the more unique your plant stand will be. Weathered stools that you use as a plant stand can add a touch of unique country to your home decor.

When it comes to home improvement, small additions such as power strips and surge protectors can be extremely beneficial. Power strips allow for you to easily turn off groups of electronics, saving money on energy. Most surge protectors will protect your electronics from lightning strikes and power surges.

When it comes to home improvement, consider adding extra insulation to your home to assist with your cooling costs in the summer and heating costs in the winter. This will save you money as well as keep you and your family more comfortable. The two best ways to insulate are to add weather strips to your doors and ensure that your attic is lined.

It’s important to have fun when making home improvements. While you should be careful, you should also enjoy yourself. Mistakes are more likely if you hate the task you are doing. If this describes you, think about hiring a professional.

Landscaping can easily add value to your home by creating curb appeal. Shrubs and hedges are generally affordable and easy to maintain. Trees, on the other hand, are not recommended for many reasons. Foremost, immature trees do little to enhance the attractiveness of a yard, while mature trees are often very expensive.

Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor is not the only one who can do home improvement. It can be something anyone can do. Whether it be a quick paint job or an all out new kitchen, it is something that can bring value and comfort into your home. Use the advice given in the above article, and check out a local home improvement center for ideas on how to get started.

Home Improvement Tips For Great Results From Home Inspectors Orlando

Learn some tips that can help you choose what you need to complete your home improvement jobs. You can figure out everything you need to do the job correctly and safely. Also, so that you don’t waste money on things you don’t need. It’s not so scary once you know the basics.

Hiring a professional organizer for a home storage makeover, can do wonders for your home’s look. Most of us have catch all areas throughout the house, where items tend to go to die. We all have areas that we look at and say that we’ll straighten it out tomorrow. A professional organizer can suggest changes you can make to avoid these problem areas and make your home more efficient.

When doing home improvement projects, you must have the proper tools. Having the proper tools will guarantee your job to be done as easy and as smoothly as possible. Ensure that you completely understand how to use any tool you are working with to ensure safety.

As you begin your home improvement project, remember to be flexible. Projects may take longer than you would like, may cost more than you want to pay and may eat up more resources than you planned on using. Be flexible in all stages of the process, and you will find that the project will be a more enjoyable experience for you.

TV entertainment stands cost quite a bit of money. A great viable alternative to those expensive stands is buying a nice dresser. You can put your TV on top and use the dresser drawers to store your DVDs and CD’s. Your remote controls and electronic manuals can also be stored in a drawer preventing it from being an eyesore.

When looking to sell your home, be sure to define all of the spaces in your home. Place the appropriate accessories and furniture in each room. When you do this, each room in the house looks more comforting and comfortable to live in. Homes with well defined spaces are more attractive and make for faster sales.

New cabinet pulls and knobs are a quick and easy way to dress up your kitchen. Installing cabinet knobs is easy and can really add a great look to a kitchen that is getting outdated. This is the perfect time to give the cabinets a thorough cleaning and is easier to do while you have the hardware removed. Screw on your new knobs and you’re finished!

As you can see, choosing what you need to successfully complete a home improvement job isn’t as difficult as it may appear. It just requires doing research, reading regulations, working hard, and asking a lot of questions. The work will pay off, once you see how it can help your home.

Improve Your Home Value And Appearance With Orlando Home Inspectors

Most people are very fearful when it comes to the topic of home improvement. Whether the physical requirements of the job seem great or the task too complicated, many people are beaten before they begin their home improvement task. This article is meant to provide you with the requisite knowledge to take on those around the house jobs that you would otherwise hire someone to do.

If your budget will allow it, opt for real wood floors instead of laminate. Laminate floors may look like real wood and be easier to clean, however they cannot be refinished. Having real wood floors means that in a decade or two, you or the new home owner will have the option of refinishing instead of replacing the floor.

There are a few ways to deal with screws that are too tight or too loose in your home. Use clear nail polish to tighten screws that are too loose. To loosen screws that are too tight, try adding peroxide or ammonia, letting them soak for just a few minutes before attempting to unscrew.

If you have a small, cramped kitchen make sure to choose light colored cabinetry. If you go with dark cabinetry, it will make your kitchen seem even smaller. Choosing a light color, can in fact enhance your sense of space and make your kitchen seem warmer.

Before using your kitchen cabinet drawers to put your utensils and other things in, consider a solution to keep them clean. A lot of discount and dollar stores sell vinyl wallpaper that has an adhesive back. Cut a piece of the adhesive wallpaper to fit your drawer, then peel off the backing and adhere. Taking this step will prevent your drawers from getting damaged and the wallpaper can be easily peeled off and replaced.

When trying to fix up a house to flip it, pay attention to the kitchen. If has linoleum floors, replace them with tile. It makes the place look much better. You should examine the counters and look at replacing them. They don’t have to be granite, but granite counter tops increase the value of the home and up your chances of selling it.

There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of doing a job yourself and doing the job well. The most important part of home improvement is to overcome your fear. By taking a job one step at a time and following the instructions and advice provided by this article, you will be surprised at what you can accomplish!

Three Bad-Mouthed Building Material Myths From Orlando Home Inspectors

More homeowners are keeping Mother Nature in mind when undertaking a renovation, addition or new construction. They’re seeking building practices and materials that are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. If you’re among these groups, you may choose to avoid construction materials you’ve come to think of as “not green.”

The truth, however, is that some maligned materials are actually more environmentally safe than alternatives that may seem more natural. Here are three popular materials that are greener than you may think:

Plastic pipe

You would probably have a hard time thinking of a material more universally reviled as bad for the environment than plastic. While it’s true that plastic doesn’t break down in landfills, certain types of plastics, when used correctly and in the right applications, are eco-friendly thanks to their sheer durability. They’ll last longer, which requires less consumption of other materials and resources to manufacture replacements, and they’ll reduce the waste stream.

PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) pipe is a good example. Used in hot- and cold-water plumbing, residential fire sprinkler systems and radiant floor-heating systems, PEX is actually a better option than copper, another material commonly used for the same applications.

“The processes used for mining and refining copper, and turning it into pipe, consume a great deal of natural resources,” says Dale Stroud, senior director of offerings/marketing for Uponor North America, which uses PEX in its plumbing, heating and residential fire sprinkler systems. “Like all metal, it will eventually corrode and wear out. Replacing it can be costly and labor-intensive, and discarded piping is not always recyclable.”

PEX, however, is created through less energy-intensive means, and its durability ensures that it will virtually never wear out. Its use in new construction or renovation pretty much ensures the homeowner will never have to replace the product, meaning fewer resources consumed for repair, removal, reinstallation and disposal of discarded piping.

PEX piping delivers clean, healthy water for household uses, including drinking, cooking and bathing, and can even help conserve water and energy compared to leaky, less-efficient metal pipes. When used in radiant floor heating and cooling systems, PEX is energy-efficient, and improves the overall temperature comfort of a home or a commercial building.

“While PEX is made from crude oil and natural gas, if you consider alternative uses of those resources, you might conclude that a durable use (such as pipe) is better for the environment than single-use applications like gasoline or diesel fuel for vehicle engines that contribute to greenhouse gases,” Stroud says. To learn more about PEX, visit www.uponor-usa.com.

Vinyl siding

Vinyl siding is another product that many homeowners mistakenly think of as less eco-friendly than other types of siding. But this highly energy-efficient siding is also green in other ways, too.

“Throughout the processes of manufacturing, transportation, installation, service life and waste management, vinyl siding scores well on tough environmental measures,” the Vinyl Siding Institute says on its website. “Hands down (it scores) better than brick or fiber cement.”

The vinyl siding manufacturing process produces little to no waste, and because the siding is relatively lightweight, it’s more fuel-efficient to transport than other types of siding, the VSI reports. Installation generates little scrap, meaning less waste to dispose of, and the product’s longevity means homeowners are much less likely to need to replace it – and that means less construction waste in landfills.

In fact, according to VSI analysis of data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, vinyl siding has the second-lowest environmental impact of any siding product (exceeded only by cedar shingles). Vinyl manufacturing requires little water and fossil fuels, creates minimal smog, has little impact on ozone depletion and affects animal habitats minimally, the data indicate.

Rubber roof shingles

While the process of creating rubber still has significant environmental impact, Americans have become much more adept at recycling rubber – especially tires – meaning less rubber waste in landfills. Rubber roof shingles are a cost-effective, durable, good-looking alternative to other single styles – and they’re more eco-friendly than you might imagine.

Made primarily from recycled tires, rubber roof shingles can mimic the appearance of slate tiles, but far surpass the popular stone in terms of durability. They’re impact- and moisture-resistant – two of the main causes of damage to traditional roofing materials.

Although they’re not the cheapest roofing material available, rubber roof tiles can be considered “green” on multiple levels. Not only are they made from recycled materials using a process that has minimal environmental impact, their incredible longevity means homeowners may live in their houses for decades without ever needing to replace their roofs. At least one manufacturer guarantees its rubber roof shingles for 50 years.

Choosing green building materials is a good thing. Fortunately some of the most durable and cost-effective materials are also among the greenest.

Master Suite Upgrades With Orlando Home Inspectors Help

All signs point to a hearty real estate market this summer. Experts say more inventory will be available and buyers will have an easier time getting mortgages, all of which means more competition among sellers.

If you plan to put your home on the market this spring or summer, you might be looking for the most cost-effective renovations to set your house apart from the competition. Assuming you’ve already taken care of the two top rooms to renovate – kitchen and bathroom – what’s your next move?

Three words: master suite upgrades.

Americans spend a lot of time in the bedroom. The master suite is, arguably, the area of the house where you most want to feel like the king or queen of your domain. After you’ve wowed potential buyers with a great kitchen and bathroom, a beautiful master suite could be the feature that seals the deal.

A mid-range master suite addition recoups 67.5 percent of its cost at the time of resale, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report. Fortunately, you can create a big impact on a master suite with a modest remodeling budget.

The luxury of light and fresh air

Many masters occupy the second floor, making them prime locations for an upgrade that is attention-grabbing, energy-efficient and practical, all without being costly: adding skylights.

Natural light and fresh air can make a room feel larger, more open and more welcoming. Opening a wall to add a window is rarely practical, but skylights can bring natural light and improve air quality in a master with less fuss. If yours is on the first floor, tubular skylights, such as Sun Tunnels by skylight maker Velux America, can deliver natural light into spots where a traditional skylight won’t work.

For your second-floor master, an ENERGY STAR-certified solar-powered, fresh-air skylight provides daylighting, privacy and more security than an open window (always a concern for a bedroom), as well as cost-effective passive ventilation. Add solar-powered blinds and skylight energy performance ratings improve by as much as 45 percent. Even better, the installation of solar-powered skylights and blinds, plus installation costs, can be eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more. There’s a skylight planner app there that will allow you to visualize skylights in your own home and to calculate your potential tax savings.

Little things mean a lot

Often, sellers focus on big-picture issues and overlook the small details that win buyers’ hearts. For example, while it’s important to paint the walls a neutral, appealing color, don’t forget to repaint baseboards, window trim, ceilings and inside closets, too – all significantly affect the overall look of a room. Even when you account for the extra time and paint needed for trim, painting remains one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to freshen a room’s appearance.

Be sure to repaint the master bathroom in a color that complements the master bedroom. Add decadent but cost-effective touches like plush towels, a towel-warming rack and an upgraded shower head and faucets. Consider the shower door. Is it old and shabby-looking with glass that has become hazy? Replacing it is a simple, quick fix that will put a bright face on the shower stall. Swap out a straight shower curtain rod for a curved one that greatly increases the spaciousness of the shower area.

Add light, airy curtains to make the room look bigger and brighter, luxurious bedding to impart a restful atmosphere, and you’ll have created a master suite that’s sure to be an asset when it’s time to sell.

Orlando Home Inspectors Resale Value Increase Tips

Investing in home improvements is a smart idea when you’re thinking of putting your home on the market. So where is the best place to spend your money?

While it may be tempting to make cosmetic home improvements including decorating touches or fresh coats of paint, upgrading vital home systems such as heating and cooling can really pay off. In fact, making smart improvements can help you save money on your utility bills now, while increasing your home’s value to potential buyers later on down the road.

Heating and cooling is one of a home’s biggest costs, accounting for more than half the average home’s utility costs, according to energy.gov, which means it makes good sense to make efficiency improvements that positively impact your budget every month. And for the long term, potential buyers want assurance that basic home systems, including heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical, are in working order before they buy, RealEstate.com reports.

  • * Heating and cooling: On average, you should consider replacing your heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system every 10 years in order to take advantage of the latest energy-saving technologies and cost efficiencies. Replacing your old system with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of up to 20.00, such as American Standard’s AccuComfort Platinum ZV air conditioner, can save you up to 60 percent on your annual cooling costs.
  • * Home automation: You can also stay ahead of the real estate curve and provide additional value for your home through the use of advanced home automation technology. For instance, Nexia Home Intelligence enables you to remotely manage multiple features and functions of your home including heating and cooling, as well as door looks, indoor and outdoor live video surveillance and storage, lights and shades, via any Web-enabled computer, smartphone or tablet.
  • * A programmable control: Another way to reduce energy consumption is to install a programmable HVAC control, which can save up to 15 percent compared to traditional non-programmable thermostats. The American Standard AccuLink Platinum ZV Control makes it easier than ever to monitor the indoor and outdoor temperatures of your home. You can also monitor heating and cooling use over time, so you can manage energy and comfort even further.
  • * Home inspection, repair and advice: As you look ahead to warmer weather for making home improvements, remember that now is an ideal time to purchase a new home comfort system. A qualified HVAC dealer can perform an inspection, advise you on preventative maintenance and make recommendations on heating and cooling systems that best fit your home’s needs. Choosing an American Standard Customer Care Dealer means you’re assured of an independent dealer who is committed to being the best in installation, customer satisfaction and employee training. Find one near you at AmericanStandardAir.com.

Orlando Home Inspectors Success Strategies

You’ve probably heard the saying: “Your home is your castle.” But if your current home – or the home you’re thinking of buying – feels more like the servant’s quarters than the royal palace, you may need to plan a renovation. At times like these it’s easy to give in to your excitement and get the project moving forward, but take a moment to plan your overall strategy. You’ll find that, much like your future castle, your renovation project will benefit from a solid foundation.

You can build your foundation by accomplishing these important tasks.

Talk to a renovation specialist.

Acquiring a renovation loan allows you to finance your new home mortgage and your renovation plans into a single loan. And an important aspect of the renovation loan to remember is that it’s a product in which the loan is based on the value of the home after it’s been improved. If you are renovating your existing home, you can use the loan to refinance your existing mortgage and make the renovation updates.

“Many consumers are not aware of the opportunities with renovation financing because not every lender offers this option, said Bill Trees, national renovation program manager, Wells Fargo. “Wells Fargo is the nation’s leader in renovation financing. We serve all customers from first time homebuyers to repeat buyers, and have a team of specially trained home mortgage consultants across the country that only focus on renovation lending.”

Speaking with a renovation lender can help you build your financial foundation for your renovation project.

Shop around for the right contractor.

If you plan to use a contractor for your project, it’s important to select the right one. But how do you decide on a contractor? Research is important. Many contractors will provide you with a couple of references but this isn’t always a fool-proof solution. These references could be relatives or friends of the contractor.

References can be helpful but don’t rely on it exclusively. Dig deeper by traveling to the site of the contractor’s current job. Are the clients happy? Has the contractor’s work met expectations and budget? Has the contractor finished benchmarks on time? These are all important questions to ask. You can also inquire about the contractor’s work on social media and professional referral websites.

Finalize your vision.

Selecting the proper renovation specialist and contractor are key to your project, but both of these professionals will be able to provide you better service if you have a vision for what the project entails. You may not know exactly how much the project will cost, but you should have a budget in mind. If your contractor asks questions about layout or wall preferences, be ready to make the decisions and guide him or her toward your goals. Approaching the project with a plan will eliminate miscommunication and regrets later.

Renovating a new or existing property can be an exciting time, and establishing the proper foundation for the project can help you pass inspections and build the home you’ve always wanted. You can learn more about how renovation financing can make your dream project a reality by visiting the Wells Fargo Home Improvement Lending Center.

Orlando Home Inspectors Less Than $5,000 Improvement

Curious which home improvement costs less than $5,000, delivers the highest return on investment and has the maximum impact on curb appeal?

According to the latest studies, the answer is a new garage door.

A garage door replacement is one of the best value-returning home improvement investments, according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2014 Cost vs. Value Report. This exhaustive annual study uses input from nationwide Realtors to compare the average cost for 35 popular remodeling projects against the value those projects retained at resale.

Of all the home improvement projects that cost less than $5,000, a mid-range and an upscale garage door replacement rank second and third as projects that deliver the most value at resale.

The true front door

A mid-range entry door replacement ranks first. However, the curb appeal of an entry door can’t compare with the impact of a front-facing two-car garage door. This door commands almost six times more visible space than the entry door. The curb appeal impact is even greater when the garage door is a $2,800 upscale model.

The conventional wisdom of yesteryear suggested that a home’s front entry door was the center of curb appeal attention. Realtors of the 1980s would commonly recommend spending extra dollars on an upscale front entrance.

But today, as front doors are used less and garage doors are used more, home improvement experts recognize that a front-facing garage door commands much more impact and curb appeal than a front door that is often shrouded in shadow.

“The most noticeable architectural element of today’s home is the garage door,” says Gale Steves, former editor-in-chief of Home Magazine, a primary conduit of home improvement ideas to its 4 million readers.

If you plan to stay in your home and improve its value, Steves recommends focusing on the curb appeal of the home, making it as attractive as possible from the street. For front-facing garages, she recommends upgrading an old garage door to a new carriage style door that offers attractive styling that complements the home’s unique character.

Paying for itself

In the 2014 Cost vs. Value Report, the typical cost for an upscale garage door ($2,791) delivered an estimated value at sale of $2,315, equating to an 83 percent return on investment. The $1,534 cost for a mid-range garage door replacement had an estimated value at sale of $1,283, or 84 percent of the original cost.

In several cities and U.S. regions, an upscale garage door actually returned more than 100 percent of its cost. This was particularly true for large cities in California and the Pacific region.

In a separate study, more than 71 percent of Realtors nationwide felt that an attractive new garage door added as much as 4 percent of the selling price. That’s a bump of $10,000 on a $250,000 home, which means that a new garage door can pay for itself.

Choosing the right design

Before you begin your garage door project, make sure you see the wide range of new styles available. The right one will complement and enhance your home’s personality.

A helpful website is GarageWowNow.com, a non-commercial site developed by the garage door industry. The site includes before and after photos and displays many fresh styles introduced in recent years from leading manufacturers.

The one-day makeover

A local professional door dealer can help you find the right look for your home and install the door correctly, quickly and safely. This delivers a stunning home makeover in only a few hours, with no clean-up and no mess.

But don’t try to install the door yourself. It’s a complex and dangerous task, performed with springs under extremely high tension.

With a small investment of time and money, a stunning new garage door can make your home the envy of the neighborhood. And you can be confident that your investment will pay off in the short and the long run.

Home Inspector Orlando Upgrades – Energy Efficiency

Spring is the perfect time to think green. For some it’s spurred by the coming of Earth Day, others the renewed greening of our lawns. And many are motivated by the desire to save a little green in their wallets with a fresh new season of home repairs. If you’re one of these people, you can help save some green for the planet, as well as your hard-earned cash, by making energy efficient upgrades throughout your home.

Helping the world stay green gained traction with the first Earth Day held March 22, 1970, as declared by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. As a nation, much has been accomplished with the environmental movement, yet there are also easy things you can do at home to “go green” and save money at the same time. Here are some tips for home energy efficiency upgrades indoors and out.

* Cool efficiently: When it comes to home energy bills, heating and cooling accounts for as much as half of the average home’s utility costs, according to energy.gov. Get ready for the hottest days of summer by tuning up your heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system so it’s operating efficiently. Change your HVAC filters regularly. In addition, if your cooling system is more than 10 years old, consider replacing it with one that has a Seasonal Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 20.00 for better savings. Trane’s XL20i, for example, can mean a savings of up to 60 percent on your annual cooling costs – that’s cool cash in your pocket.

* Programmable temperature controls: A programmable HVAC control can reduce energy consumption by up to 15 percent compared to traditional nonprogrammable thermostats. Today’s HVAC control systems, like the Trane ComfortLink II Control, now monitor indoor and outdoor temperatures, plus home energy use over time, to help you manage energy and comfort even further.

* Conserve water: Remember, water isn’t free. Indoors, lower water bills by installing low-flow water fixtures including toilets, showerheads and faucets. Outdoors, add a water-saving spigot for the garden hose. To avoid water evaporation, water your plants early or late in the day, and when your green lawn starts to grow, don’t mow too low. If you have lawn sprinklers, double check that they are set to water grass and shrubbery instead of the driveway or sidewalk. Rather than hose down your deck to clean it, save water by sweeping instead.

* Lighting: About 10 percent of the energy your home uses goes to lighting costs, according to energy.gov – in fact, by just replacing five of your home’s most frequently used lights with energy efficient ENERGY STAR bulbs, you could save $75 a year in energy costs. Compared with traditional incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescents can yield as much as 75 percent energy savings and last six times longer. You can save even more energy and wasted heat by switching to LEDs. Outdoor lights using CFLs or LEDS save energy, too, so look for ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures designed for outdoor use.

By taking these steps, you can help make the world a little greener, keep your home a little greener, and save even more green where it really hits home – in your wallet.
